Cellulite
As fat cells duplicate, they push up against the skin. Tough, fibrous strands pull down. This creates an uneven surface or dimpling, often referred to as cellulite. Cellulite is a very common, often related to weight gain. It is harmless but can cause lumpy, dimpled flesh on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen.

Cellulite
What is it?

It is a term for the formation of lumps and dimples within the skin.
Common names for cellulite are orange-peel skin, cottage-cheese skin.
Cellulite can affect both men and women, but it is more common in females, due to the different distributions of fat, muscle, and connective tissue. Women generally have a higher fat content so this makes them more prone to cellulite, with around 80 and 90 % of women experiencing cellulite at some point in their lives.

What causes it ?

The exact cause of cellulite is unknown, but it appears to result from the connective tissue strands in the dermal layer that lies below the surface of the skin, and the layer of fat that is just below it. The reason why women suffer from cellulite more is because, the fat cells and connective tissue in this layer are arranged vertically. Thus when fat cells protrude from below into the layer of skin, this gives the appearance of cellulite.
In males the fibrous strands have a criss-cross structure, which is more sturdy and this explains why males are less likely to have cellulite than women.

Hormonal factors and age

Hormones play an important role in cellulite development. Estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and prolactin are part of the cellulite production process.
Lower levels of circulation due to the reduction in estrogen during menopause means less oxygen in the area, resulting in lower collagen production. Fat cells also enlarge during the menopause which can cause weight gain. With thinner skin as a result of the hormonal changes this in turn makes the fat deposits more visible. As the fat under the skin protrudes through weakening connective tissue, cellulite emerges. The thinning of the skin
along with reduced elasticity, means the skin is more likely to sag which causes an increase the chance of cellulite developing.

Genetic factors

Certain genes are required for cellulite development. Genetic factors can be linked to a person’s speed of metabolism, distribution of fat under the skin, ethnicity, and circulatory levels. It's likely if your parents suffered with cellulite you will too.

Dietary and lifestyle factors

Exercise and a normal healthy weight may help reduce the appearance of cellulite, however this isnt always the case as some females with very little fat have cellulite too. It is a certainty that those who eat more than the recommended amount of fat, carbohydrates, and salt and too little fiber have greater amounts of cellulite.
Smoking, not exercising and sitting or standing in one position for long periods of time are also known to contribute to cellulite development.
It is more likely to happen after the age of 25 years, but it can affect those younger as well, including teenagers.
